Robert Garriock

Tell us why you are interested in being on the Kenmont Board.

I want to ensure that member’s needs are being addressed by the Kenmont board. I currently serve on the Kenmont Capital Improvements Committee and want to participate in the board to facilitate effective dissemination of improvement proposals to the board. I am a fair, understanding, and open-minded person and feel that I can have a positive impact on the board.

Please tell us about yourself.

Ph.D. scientist, analyst, and project manager. I am very involved at Kenmont and can be found at the pool every day. My kids, William and Charlie, swim on the Kenmont swim team and participate with coaching. My ex-wife is one of the swim team representatives and retired board member. I volunteer as a stroke and turn official and support the team at every swim meet. On Fridays I make pancakes for the kids on the swim team – thousands of pancakes. I am an avid lap swimmer and love to socialize at the pool. I also prepare food for the crab feast and support the holiday picnics. As mentioned above, I have been a member of the Capital Improvements Committee and currently serve as the interim committee chair. I am the person you see lugging propane tanks around to ensure the grills are ready to cook. I value my time at Kenmont and do what I can to give back to the club. You can usually find me at the pool for opening and closing clean-ups. I am a handy person and avid gardener. I do what I can out of my spare time to save Kenmont a little money fixing things or garden/grounds maintenance!

Please tell us anything else you think the membership should know.

If voted onto the board, I will continue support the needs of Kenmont. I am a frugal person and will always advocate for cost effective solutions to keep the facility in top condition while maintaining membership fees at reasonable levels.

I want to serve on the Kenmont Board because I believe in the importance of creating spaces where families and friends can come together to enjoy recreation, build relationships, and foster a sense of belonging. As a prospective board member, my primary goal is to contribute to the continued success and growth of Kenmont by leveraging my skills, experiences, and passion for our community.

A few specific areas where I hope to make a meaningful impact:

1. Enhancing Member Experience: I am committed to ensuring that all Kenmont members feel valued and enjoy their experiences at the club. The current board has made many valuable improvements to the club and member experience and I aim to maintain and support that momentum by actively listening to the needs and concerns of the membership.

2. Financial Sustainability: Board members have a fiduciary responsibility to ensure the long-term viability of Kenmont. Responsible financial management and prudent stewardship of resources are critical skills for board members. I am interested in exploring new revenue streams for the club, and would focus on careful management of expenses and prioritization of capital expenditures that benefit the entire Kenmont community.

3. Promoting Inclusion and Community Enjoyment: Kenmont’s vibrant and diverse membership is a community where neighbors are able to come together, feel welcomed, form new friendships, and enjoy the club’s facilities. It is important for the leadership of a membership club to stay responsive to the community’s changing needs and interests over time. The club’s offerings and activities should ensure that all feel welcome and valued, while continuing the beloved traditions and experiences that make Kenmont special. Last season, the club adapted by adding wifi, pickleball, and new social events - live music and Adult Night. I helped plan and execute the inaugural Adult Night event and the December cookie exchange party. I hope to continue planning more social events in the upcoming season that will appeal to members of all ages and diverse interests to further enrich our community.

Equally as important as the vision and guidance that I would hope to provide: I am a doer. Throughout my professional and volunteer career, I have shown that I am as comfortable making the plans as I am executing them. If elected, I would bring new energy and a hands-on approach to my duties as a board member.

My family (Alex - husband, Andrew - son, age 8) joined Kenmont in 2012. We spend the majority of our leisure time in the summers at the pool. For the past two summers, Andrew has competed in 8&Under swim for the Tsunami and I have enjoyed volunteering at meets, particularly as the Clerk of Course, because I get to know almost all the kids on the team. Our family’s time at Kenmont really is the highlight of our year.

Currently, I work part-time as a fundraising and event planning consultant and as a substitute teacher at St. Patrick’s Episcopal Day School, where Andrew attends school. I attended Washington and Lee University (undergraduate) and American University (graduate).

Community Volunteer Experience

I have always been an active volunteer, often serving in Board-level or other leadership roles.

I was the President of the Junior League of Washington in 2020 (during COVID!). The Junior League of Washington was founded in 1912 and is a women’s service organization with 2,300 members in the DC metropolitan region. I have served on the League’s board for 4 years, having joined in 2009.

I have been an active volunteer at St. Patrick’s Episcopal Day School, including serving as a Parents Association Board Member, and will serve as Parents Association President beginning in June. As President, I will also serve on the Day School’s Board of Trustees, with a term running from June 2024 through May 2026. Additionally, I serve as an Admissions Ambassador, attending admissions events and being a resource to prospective families. I also serve on the Day School’s Sustainability Committee.

I continue to serve my undergraduate alma mater, Washington & Lee University, as a member of the Alumni Board, which includes a position on the Trustee Selection Committee. I am also a member of the Alumni Admissions Program Committee, which I previously chaired for several years.

My hobbies include gardening, reading, traveling, DIY home improvement, swimming (mainly just floating), and, of course, volunteering! We have no pets, but Andrew might someday talk us into a dog…someday.

My family loves Kenmont and it would be a joy to serve the member community on the Board!

I hope to help the board and members move forward with ongoing and future projects in a cost effective manner. I would like to help and work with the board to ensure we are moving in the right direction with the facilities and membership. I hope to continue to facilitate the great relationship between the members, board and swim team. Most importantly, I hope to help continue making Kenmont the best place to spend our summers!

I'm a landscape designer at a firm in Bethesda that I've been with for 21 years, I'm married with two kids; one is a high school sophomore and the other is in sixth grade, I LOVE to read and encourage everyone to talk with me about books!

I've been active with the Kenmont Capital Improvement Committee for a few years. This is my tenth summer as a swim team volunteer and my third summer as a team representative for the Tsunami swim team. I am the co-founder of the ridiculously awesome Kenmont Book Club. If you enjoy reading and haven't joined us for a book club meeting, please do so, it's a fantastic group!!

I've been a Kenmont member for the last few years and we're increasingly spending time here. My kid(s) are on swim team (7 and 3 so will join soon), our community/friends are increasingly joining. Honestly I've realized we're going to be spending a lot of time over the next 10 years at the pool, so want to do my part to help as much as possible. In terms of why me ... I have a strong business/finance and technology background (so understand managing a P&L, understand how tech can help with websites/newsletters), am good at organizing events and often do this at work, am organized and can find ways to automate processes, have 10+ family friends who have joined in the last 2-3 years so can increasingly represent a newer generation of members, and drama free :)

Occupation - I work at Amazon (no I can't get discounts/deals... but work in tech so know technology things). Family of four, two boys, one goes to Oakland Terrace (1st grade) and one goes to Spring Bilingual. I live in the neighborhood on Drumm. My wife and I grew up around neighborhood pools so we were quick to join when we purchased a home in K-Town, and have been strong advocates in our community for others to join/sign-up. I was an Eagle Scout boy scout, so did a lot of community events and public service growing up. My wife is a swimmer, so she also goes for exercise and can represent that POV. No experience on other boards, no pets (yet), etc. I'm into cooking and often the one doing this on friend weekends ... so happy to man the grills if we had neighborhood cookouts, man the pots if we do a crab feast, etc. I'm also frugal and know how to shop around for products/services to get the best deal as well. I'm currently not managing a team, but am good at managing people, dealing with complicated people issues/staff, have helped detangle situations with HR at work as well if needed. I don't play tennis but interested if there were adult lessons.

Honestly the negative on me would be that we do travel a few weekends in the summer, for beach and vacations, so those would be weekends I could not support Kenmont events.

Pam Canova Force

I was a Montgomery County School Teacher and Counselor. I taught English and Special Education. I finished up my career as a counselor at Wheaton High School, my Alma mater. I received two of my degrees from University of Maryland, College Park. My counseling degree was from John’s Hopkins.

My children started going to Kenmont with their babysitter in the late 1970’s. Our family joined later in the 1980’s. We let our membership lapse for awhile but I have been back for several years. My husband and I practice real estate in the area and the pool is just a short distance from my office in Aspen Hill/Leisure World Plaza.

I would like to build a stronger tennis community at the club.

Please tell us about yourself.

I'm a Software Engineer who is trying to get back into Tennis. I've been participating on the Capital Improvements Committee.

Please tell us anything else you think the membership should know.

My family has been a member for three seasons. My kids have been on the Tsunami swim team. I've also been involved in the Capital Improvements Committee and am one of the Tennis Co-Chairs. I'm interested in building a more active Tennis community at the club as well as making the club a more enjoyable place for all families.

I want to be a member of the board to give back to the wider pool community and to lend my experience both as a long-time member of management for Kenmont’s swim team and its Capital Improvement Committee. What I hope to accomplish is to build on prior boards’ successes but to ensure the purpose of the board stays focused on Kenmont’s core mission to ensure a fun and enjoyable summer swim season. As for what I would bring to the table, I would say that I have been able to build consensus across multiple Kenmont constituencies (e.g., swim team, younger parents, new members, tennis players, lap swimmers, etc.) that I believe would make me an effective advocate for many diverse views.

Please tell us about yourself.

I have been a member of Kenmont for over 15 years and have been active in the community nearly every single season. As a teacher, I have developed a refined understanding of the dynamic between children and adults that I believe will further inform my role on the board if lucky enough to be selected.

Both my children, in a sense, grew up at Kenmont. We went from water wings and pirate ship raft night to red lifeguard whistles and swim team seniors. To me (and my husband), this means I have experienced just about everything that Kenmont is. If given the opportunity to join the board, I believe I would be able to draw on my expansive time at Kenmont to serve the needs of the wider pool community.
